Review the materials in the start-up kit. This kit contains your application's criteria and sample bylaws that your chapter will have to modify and adopt.
Note: A sponsoring advisor educator must submit applications for NBHSC chapters. Applications cannot be accepted directly from students. Policies and Procedures governing the NBHSC program can be found here in the NBHSC Policies and Procedures.
Starting an NBHSC chapter inaugurates a formal organization at your institution. Thus, your application will require your department head's or applicable supervisor's approval. You can use this NBHSC justification brochure to communicate the value and purpose of creating a new NBHSC chapter.
Every NBHSC chapter has one lead advisor who is usually an educator (instructor, professor, etc.)
Determine who the chapter lead advisor will be.
Other advisors may be part of the chapter's work. Any active advisor participating in NBHSC events must maintain professionalism by maintaining active membership in NBEA and affiliation with the Council for Business Teaching and Research. Membership fees are $209.00US annually per advisor.
The advisors should be committed to excellence and willing to maintain their professional development commitment to the National Business Education Association.
Organizations need governance. NBHSC chapters are not different. There needs to be rules that establish the structure of your chapter. NBEA has provided sample bylaws in the start-up kit (PDF) (DOCX) that you can copy, paste, modify, approve, and enact by a vote of your NBHSC chapter board. Your institution may require approval of your chapter's bylaws for the NBHSC program as they represent a commitment by your institution.
A chapter board includes non-student stakeholders that guide the governance of the chapter. Chapter Board members are not required to be NBEA members since they may not necessarily work in education. These NBHSC chapter board members can come from contacts you identify as stakeholders in your chapter. Only participating chapter advisers are required to be NBEA members. Have your board vote to approve the chapter bylaws prior to submitting them in the application.
If you have prepared your list of requirements, including bylaws, a list of business courses with descriptions for your department, and board members with email addresses, you are ready to submit your application and material.
Once your application is reviewed, NBHSC will reply with a list of remediation items, an approval confirmation, and further directions. All chapters receive a very attractive framed charter for display at your school. Application fees are non-refundable, and the NBHSC Governing Council sanctions chapter approval.
Once the NBHSC Governing Council approves your chapter, invite eligible students to join using the unique link NBEA provides and the instructions in your approval packet. Students must join using the unique link NBEA provides so their student record will be attached to your school's master record and will receive benefits like special events, NBHSC lapel pins, a certificate, and more. Student fees for year one are $49.00US and $25.00US each year after.
NBHSC provides PowerPoint templates, sample scripts, and more to maximize your NBHC chapter induction ceremonies and events. You can also join the NBHSC Chapter community to connect with other schools and get ideas about having an excellent chapter experience.
You can also order graduation tassels, stoles, certificate holders, and more here. Orders must come from NBEA-approved NBHS or NBHSC-approved Chapters.
